As we got almost to the
island, we had to cross a completely submerged portion of the path. We
had to choose our steps wisely. One step too far to the left or right
and we would have gone in for an unplanned winter swim!
We finally reached the
island. We had been told to search around the water’s edge. Michelle was
the first one to find anything that looked like pottery. We didn't know
for sure if it was actual Indian pottery or not, but Michelle got REALLY
excited anyway. She had never found any type of Indian artifact before,
not even an arrowhead.
Almost immediately, we
started finding more. Monte found a large piece that had etched designs
on it. This definitely WAS Indian pottery!
There was pottery
everywhere!
With a little research, we
found out that this area had been a Creek Indian stronghold. Many
historic Indian villages were covered by the waters of this lake.
